Advent is a time of watching and waiting as we remember and celebrate the birth of Christ. For many Christians, Advent is a busy time of preparation for Christmas, filled with holiday shopping, Christmas caroling, and tasty treats tucked behind the doors of Advent calendars. However, Advent is also the perfect time to practice intentionality—to commit to a daily practice that roots us in this season of reflection and anticipation.

“Advent” comes from a Latin word meaning “arrival.” Advent begins the liturgical year the Western church. It is a season of patience, anticipation, preparation, and watchfulness.
The four themes of Advent are Hope, Faith, Joy, and Love, although the specific names vary depending on different denominations and traditions. The four themes are each associated with one of the four Sundays preceding Christmas.
The order of the Advent candles is as follows:
First Sunday: Hope (purple)
Second Sunday: Faith (purple)
Third Sunday: Joy (pink)

There is also an optional fifth candle that is lit on Christmas Day. This candle is white and represents Christ’s light.
