We all have something to be thankful for, though sometimes we don’t always acknowledge it. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 tells us, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
The first Thanksgiving took place in Massachusetts in the fall of 1621. Of the 102 Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock the previous year, only 58 survived the first winter. But after the next summer’s harvest, the colonists decided to have a day of feasting and prayer to share their gratitude that they were still alive and had enough food and had enough shelter to get through the winter. Their remarkable story, and the message behind it, still resonates today.
This Thanksgiving, the staff at Baker Book House would like to recommend some of the books that have helped us recognize the things in our lives that we are grateful for.
There is a wide array of books that tell stories of thankfulness and gratitude. Some of our favorites include personal stories of overcoming challenges. The power of their resilience, and of the people who helped them get through those challenges, can be great messages for Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving can be a great time to introduce your children to the concepts of thankfulness and gratitude. Read-aloud books are a wonderful way to do this, allowing for an opportunity to gather the kids (and adults) together to listen to a story about gratitude. Many families and teachers have a favorite book they read to their children each year.
This Thanksgiving, talk to your children about what it means to be thankful and why expressing gratitude to God is such an important and rewarding experience.
Thankfulness doesn’t stop after the fourth Thursday in November! There are plenty of great books you can read that will help you feel grateful and which celebrate Christian values. Many of them would make great gifts for your family and friends.
The staff at Baker has plenty of favorite Christian books we’d love to share with you, including fiction, Christmas books, and great books for kids.
